Great North Museum

Farrells worked alongside leading exhibition designers, Casson Mann on this radical transformation of the Grade II* listed Hancock Museum located in Newcastle upon Tyne to create a new flagship museum, The Great North Museum. The museum, which is the north east’s premier natural sciences museum, occupies an elevated position at the northern entrance to the city centre, on the edge of Newcastle University’s campus and forms part of the vision to create a new cultural quarter.

As well as the extensive internal restoration the project includes a new three storey extension at the rear to house special exhibitions, council/social rooms, library, archives and education zone. The scheme unites three hitherto hidden but significant museum collections into one building – the Hancock, the Museum of Antiquities and the Shefton (Greek) Collection. After completion visitors go on a journey and experience the story of the natural, physical and historical landscape of the region as well as the nationally important combined Greek and Egyptian collections.
