Great North Museum

Farrells collaborated with Casson Mann, a leading exhibition design firm, to undertake a significant overhaul of the Grade II* listed Hancock Museum located in Newcastle upon Tyne, resulting in the creation of a new flagship museum called The Great North Museum. The museum, which is the premier natural sciences museum in the northeast, is situated in an elevated position at the northern entrance to the city centre, on the edge of Newcastle University’s campus, and is part of the larger plan to establish a new cultural quarter.

The restoration project includes an extensive internal restoration and a new three-story extension at the back. The extension houses special exhibitions, council/social rooms, a library, archives, and an education zone. The project brings together three significant museum collections that were previously hidden in separate buildings. These collections are the Hancock, the Museum of Antiquities, and the Shefton (Greek) Collection
